Girls’ soccer rides 6-1 run into playoffs
Despite replacing 11 graduated seniors, the Wauwatosa East girls’ soccer team finished the regular season with a 12-5 record. Senior Anna Schmidt said the underclassmen who moved up to varsity this season have fit in well.
“Of the eight sophomores on the team, five or six of them are starting each game,” Schmidt said. “They’re only going to continue to improve as we move into the playoffs.”

Ending its third year, the intramural Ultimate Frisbee League continued a trend of increased popularity. English teacher Eric Dale remained the coordinator for his second year, following the league’s first year, when students ran it.
“I took on the responsibilities last year,” Dale said, “when two of my students asked me to help; so I started making the announcements and the schedules. There was a huge amount of interest. I had no idea this sport would be as popular as it is.

It’s amazing how much of my high school experience is tied to sports. Sports have certainly influenced my schoolwork. I’ve written a speech, a paper and a book report on former Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton, and two papers and a project about performance-enhancing drugs in baseball and the Olympics. My independent research project concerned the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

The intramural Tosa East bowling league completed its second season, ending two weeks ago. Following its success, junior Kurt Svatek is organizing East’s first weekly summer league.
Teams can sign up any time until the last day of school.
“I’m looking forward to getting a lot more teams [for summer],” he said. “I have seven teams signed up so far, but I’m hoping to get 10 or 15, especially more staff and underclassmen.”

On May 11, seniors Carl Kaiser and Sarah Pipping were presented with WIAA Scholar Athlete Awards at the annual Student Recognition and Academic and Attendance Awards Ceremony. English teacher Jean Hoffmann said she thought both were worthy candidates.
“Both [Kaiser and Pipping] are very deserving recipients. I’ve seen lots of athletes who have had a tough time holding it together academically. It’s very inspiring to see students so determined to succeed in school and in athletics,” Hoffmann said.
