School ‘Mom’ bids farewell to kids

Deb Dubinski has been recognized and valued by students, teachers, coaches and parents of the Wauwatosa School District for more than two decades.

“It is cool to have somebody like that who takes that sort of time out of their schedule,” junior Todd Williams, a Wauwatosa East High School football player, said.

She has been a volunteer in the district for 25 years and volunteered at East for 15 years.

She started by volunteering at Winterfest for the Parent Teacher Association and in many ways for the Athletic

Student Play Festival brings opportunity for new talent

Students write the plays. Students direct the plays. Students act in them and offer technical support. It is students-only.

That is what draws audiences to Wauwatosa East High School’s Student Play Festival (SPF). That same allure is what makes East students want to participate.

“[I am involved in SPF because] I like creating a work of art with my own interpretations, giving it to [directors] to interpret with their own experiences and have actors interpret it their way, too,” senior Erin Bannen said. Bannen is a playwright, and has had a play in each of the

Summer jobs provide additional funds

It’s common knowledge that students work over the summer. Students are generally in need of funds and summer is extra time to earn money. It is less widely known that a number of teachers work over the summer for the same reason.

Science department chair Judy Patrick teaches Science Academy during the summer for incoming freshmen.

This school district program allows for graduated eighth graders to complete physics level I and earth/space science over the course of a six-week summer school.

Student Council has positive impact on school

When students at Wauwatosa East High School attend dances such as Turnabout or Prom, they are usually not thinking about the work behind the dance. Most students are more concerned about whether anyone has the same dress or how long their lip gloss is lasting. However, Student Council members work for weeks to plan these memorable events.

“We put on Turnabout, the Special Olympics Prom, school spirit week, pep rallies, run the fix-up committee and freshmen orientation, as well as donating money to special causes,” senior Liya Assefa said.

Grant funds purchase 3-D food pyramids

Portion sizes are inherently confusing. Few people can accurately describe an ounce, much less determine how many chips are in three ounces. To help solve this quandry, the family and consumer education teachers applied for a grant from the Education Foundation of Wauwatosa.

Portion Perceptions is the only EFW grant related to Wauwatosa East High School that recieved the full funding that was requested. The program was awarded $1,454 to purchase two 3-D food pyramids wih plasic food in the correct portion sizes. One will transfer between East and

New freshman orientation coming next year

Traditionally, freshman orientation at Wauwatosa East High School consists of speeches from administrators and tours from upperclassmen, followed by a runthrough of the freshmen schedule before the rest of school comes in the afternoon.

“I didn’t like orientation because it was scary and overwhelming,” freshman Emily Blaser said.

German teacher Eva Tuinstra, social studies teacher Erin Gould and English teacher Maureen Kasdorf hope that will not be the case for the class of 2011.

Use of HeartMath technology has potential to reduce student stress levels

In high school, there are many stressors for students. The night before a huge test. The final minute of a big game. The looming college application deadline. The stress can become overwhelming, but now there is a new program coming to Wauwtosa East High School that can help.

Through a grant from the Education Foundation of Wauwatosa, coordinated by school social worker Sonja Nelson, all schools in the Wauwatosa School District will have access to HeartMath Freeze Framer.

This program allows students to connect their internal experiences with feedback they can see,
