Raiders return with experience; hope to emerge among Greater Metro elite

While some students are enjoy a time to completely relax, summer is when the members of the Wauwatosa East High School baseball team are just picking up their momentum.

The squad holds their tryouts in late spring and continues to play games through June and into July. Although many teams in Wisconsin have switched to playing spring baseball, the members of the Greater Metro Conference and other Milwaukee-area high schools have remained loyal to the summer.

Toubl returns to coaching field

One year. That is how long former Wauwatosa East High School varsity baseball Head Coach Jerry Toubl remained off the baseball diamond and in the crowd as merely a spectator.

Needless to say this was not an easy thing for the 27-year head coach to endure. In an interview with WauwatosaNOW, Toubl exemplified his passion for baseball by mentioning a conversation with his ex-wife.

She point-blankly asked him to choose “between [her] and baseball,” and the 1997 State champion coach simply responded by picking his first love:

East athlete joins Wall of Inspiration

Recently, Tony Smith, class of 1986, was one of the inductees into the Wauwatosa East High School Wall of Inspiration. Smith was an all-state basketball player his senior year, and attended Marquette University on a scholarship.

“He was the leading scorer [at Marquette.] He had a great college career,” Dean of Students Tom Swittel said. “Smith was drafted by the Lakers and played in the NBA for a few years.”

Spring sports come to an end

Boys track cannot climb regional hurdle, miss state

The Wauwatosa East High School boys track team went into their season with fresh talent, both in staff and athletes. With a team dominated by underclassmen, the season was spent rebuilding and training for sturdier seasons to come.

Though the team placed eighth in the Greater Metro Conference Outdoor Relays meet, they have found success in individual events and Sectional qualifiers.

The Hot Corner: The year that was in Tosa East athletics

Students at Wauwatosa East High School are well acquainted with the sights and sounds of an East sporting event. They know what each sectional volleyball game entails.

They know who the Raiders’ homecoming game opponent will be come football season. They know who the standout opposing players are during each and every home basketball game. Most importantly, they know the traditions of East sports inside and out: student sections religiously belting out cheers and “rowing” with all their hearts.
