East goes pickle crazy

This year, Wauwatosa East High School offered pickleball for an extracurricular activity. Enrollment in the pickleball tournament has been increasing the last several years, with 16 teams of two participating in the 2009 season.

Senior Michael Rankin considers himself a “true pickleball enthusist.”

“Why not play pickleball?” asked Rankin. “It is the most important thing to me and my partner.”

Until the night of Oct. 15, I had only experienced this feeling of empathy and helplessness once in my four years of attending Wauwatosa East High School sporting events. That occasion was the day when our defending state-champion boys basketball team was defeated by number one-ranked Milwaukee Washington High School in the sectional final.

Boys volleyball ‘never satisfied’

Since winning state in 2006, the boy’s volleyball team has continued to produce talented state-qualifying teams. It is no different this year as the Red Raiders are heading into the postseason looking to make it to state for the fourth year in a row.

The Red Raiders have been ranked in the top ten in state this year and hope to continue their season success into the tournament. Head coach John Simon credits the success to good athletes who put in hard work.

Soccer falls to familiar foe

Leading up to the postseason, the Wauwatosa East High School boys soccer team had very high hopes.

“We expect[ed] to go far into the playoffs this year,” senior Andrew Fredrickson said, noting that the season was “a big improvement over last year.”

In order to prepare for the games, “we converged our energy into the team and regained focus for the ruthless playoff experience,” senior Michael Rankin said.
